Minister for Police and Corrective Services
The Honourable Judy Spence
BRISBANE CBD EMERGENCY PLAN TO PREPARE CITY
People living, working and visiting Brisbane’s CBD will be better prepared for an emergency with the release of a new response plan, Premier Peter Beattie said today.
The Emergency Response Plan ‘Brisbane Secure’, will help emergency services and State and Local Government officials give the community the best possible protection and advice in the event of an accident, threat or terrorist attack in the CBD.
“This plan clearly spells out the responsibilities for each government authority, police, emergency services, the Brisbane City Council and Queensland Rail for any incident from terrorist attacks and accidents, to building collapses or even earthquakes,” Mr Beattie said.
“Just as importantly it also clearly spells out how people living, working and visiting the CBD during an emergency will be protected.
“I want to urge everyone to take the time to log onto www.police.qld.gov.au/BrisbaneSecure to learn more about the emergency plan, where they should go to receive advice or direction, and what they can expect to happen should such an incident occur,” Mr Beattie said.
A threat to transport services in the CBE made in late 2005 tested our emergency plans and it was clear that improvements could be made to ensure people in the CBD were better informed during such an event.
“We have developed this plan to help us act as soon as possible to protect people,” Mr Beattie said.
Police Minister Judy Spence said a Queensland Police Service project team coordinated the government agencies involved in the formation of the plan.
“Brisbane Secure establishes a framework for a multi-agency crisis management response to significant emergency incidents occurring within the Brisbane CBD,” Ms Spence said.
“In October last year more than 100 invited guests took part in an exercise at City Hall to test a draft version of this plan.
“The evaluators found the plan to be sound and well prepared and wide praise was received on a number of key aspects of the plan including its operational practicality and inter-agency coordination,” Ms Spence said.
The Brisbane CBD Evacuation Plan will continue to evolve and undergo review and testing and will provide an ongoing public education strategy.
“As our city continues to grow we must ensure we are always ready to quickly react and respond in the event of a crisis or emergency incident,” Mr Beattie said.
