Premier and Minister for Trade
The Honourable Peter Beattie
CONTINGENCY FUNDS BENEFIT COMMUNITY PROJECTS
A wide range of charities and community projects had been funded under the Department of Premier and Cabinet’s contingency fund so far this financial year, Premier Peter Beattie, said today.
Mr Beattie said the projects ranged from an underprivileged children’s circus through to an aquatic festival and a St Patrick Day parade.
He said the Department operated a contingency fund to provide the government with the capacity and flexibility to respond to unexpected or emergency events and the needs of individuals and communities affected.
Operating such a fund has been a standard procedure in Queensland for many years and under many different governments and access to the fund requires the approval of the Governor-in-Council, the Director-General or the Premier.
“The contingency fund provides a resource to meet emergent needs for various initiatives of economic, social, regional or environmental importance to Queensland,” Mr Beattie said.
“It is also available to provide whole of government contributions to charitable organisations and disaster appeals and to provide assistance to local authorities, deserving causes and community groups.”
Mr Beattie said the majority of the one-off grants ranged from $10,000 to $50,000.
“Charities to benefit in the 2006/07 financial year to date include the Returned Services League, the Smith Family, St Vincent de Paul, Surf Lifesavers, Lifeline, the Royal Humane Society, the National Heart Foundation, the Queensland Paralympic Council and Epilepsy Queensland,” he said.
Attached is a list of projects awarded funding under the Department of Premier and Cabinet contingency fund for the 2006-07 financial year to date.
