The Honourable Peter Beattie

Q150 CELEBRATIONS TO BENEFIT CHARITIES AND COUNCILS

Personalised licence plates have been struck to help celebrate Queensland’s 150th birthday and Councils and charities are set to be the big winners from the unique collector’s item, Premier Peter Beattie, announced today.

“We will provide individual plates to the Salvation Army, St Vincent de Paul, the Queensland Cancer Fund, the Smith Family, and Wesley Mission to raffle or auction at fundraisers,” Mr Beattie said.

“In addition, Queensland Councils will be invited to purchase the number plates for $1,000 each to be used as promotional opportunities in the lead-up to our birthday over the next two years.

“The money paid by the Councils will be put into the Q150 celebrations and in 2009, the number plates will be auctioned by Councils with all funds raised to be directed towards funding Q150 celebrations within their own local government areas.

“To ensure equity of distribution across the State there will be a limit of one number plate per council. All councils will be invited to submit an expression of interest to purchase the plates, and if oversubscribed, plates will be allocated in a ballot.

“The plates are bright, colourful and very distinctive and I have no doubt they will be very popular.

“In fact, I am encouraging motorists to toot their horn when they see one of the plates out on the road to help celebrate our birthday!”

Mr Beattie said the 150th birthday celebrations were full steam ahead and would present a special opportunity for Queenslanders to come together to celebrate our past and look forward to the future.

He said his Government had established a $4 million Community Funding Program to help not-for-profit groups, tertiary institutions, local councils and incorporated bodies bodies celebrate in ways relevant to their own communities. The one-off community grants are between $2,000 and $10,000, being issued in three rounds and can be used for initiatives ranging from commemorative publications through to memorials, events and exhibitions.
