MONUMENTAL SCULPTURE DEDICATED TO GALLERY DIRECTOR

A sculpture by one of the world’s most significant living sculptors will be dedicated to outgoing Queensland Art Gallery Director Doug Hall, Premier Peter Beattie announced tonight.

Premier Peter Beattie announced the dedication of the artwork, by Anish Kapoor, at the 2007 Queensland Art Gallery Foundation dinner.

“This will be a lasting recognition of Doug Hall’s 20-year contribution to the Gallery and to Queensland,” Mr Beattie said.

“Under his guidance and direction, the Queensland Art Gallery has become an innovator and a leader in many areas,” he said.

“The Gallery is today a truly dynamic and accessible art museum of national and international standing.”

Mr Beattie said the sculpture was commissioned for the collection by the Queensland Art Gallery Board of Trustees to mark the opening of the Gallery of Modern Art (GoMA), and it was funded by the Foundation.

“The fibreglass and resin sculpture is the largest contemporary art acquisition the Gallery has ever made and it will be shown publicly for the first time later this year.”

Arts Minister Rod Welford said the dedication of the artwork to Mr Hall was a fitting tribute to the outstanding contribution he had made to the Gallery.

“This monumental work was created specifically for GoMA and is the first of its kind in an Australian collection,” Mr Welford said.

“Much of the success of GoMA can be attributed to Doug being a driving force behind its creation and realisation.”

Born in India and currently living and working in the United Kingdom, Anish Kapoor is only represented in Australian collections by smaller-scale sculptural works and works on paper.

He makes only a few works each year so his art is in demand around the world.

Several of his sculptural works are featured in The 5th Asia-Pacific Triennial of Contemporary Art which is on display at the Queensland Art Gallery and GoMA until May 27.
