Queensland’s Youth Week celebrations launched in Thuringowa

Twin Cities young people will be the star attractions when Queensland’s National Youth Week celebrations are officially launched in Thuringowa tomorrow.

Youth Minister Warren Pitt said Thuringowa would host this year’s state launch of National Youth Week, a joint initiative supported by Commonwealth, state and local governments.

“Local young people will take centre stage at Thuringowa’s Riverway tomorrow, where a day of exciting youth-orientated events and activities will be staged,” Mr Pitt said.

“This is a unique opportunity for young people to showcase their talents and abilities while highlighting the positive contributions they make to the community.”

Member for Thuringowa Craig Wallace said the program for tomorrow’s launch was impressive.

“With activities ranging from the Battle of the Bands competition and hip hop workshops to Frisbee games and drama performances, the line-up has something for everyone,” he said.

The 8th annual National Youth Week will be held from Saturday, 14 April, to Sunday, 22 April, with more than one million young Australians expected to take part in registered events and activities.

Mr Pitt will also attend the Lead On community dinner in Townsville tonight, an event that has been organised and staged by local young people from start to finish.

“National Youth Week is all about empowering young people aged between 12 and 25 to voice their ideas and opinions, as well as their concerns and hopes for the future,” Mr Pitt said.

“This year, the Queensland Government has allocated $94,000 to 10 community organisations across the state to celebrate and promote National Youth Week events and activities.

“Young Queenslanders will be spoilt for choice as planned events include skate board competitions, art exhibitions, skill-building workshops and live concerts.

“Now is the chance to get involved, be heard and make a difference.”
