A Queensland Government grant of $62,850 to Leeding Care Australia will provide a significant boost in community access for people with a disability in north Brisbane.

Disability Services Minister Warren Pitt said Leeding Care Australia planned to buy a specially modified vehicle for people with high physical support needs who were living in its supported accommodation house at Kurwongbah.

“The new vehicle is a vital addition to services, as there are currently no appropriate public transport options available in the Kurwongbah area for people with high physical support needs,” Mr Pitt said.

“The new vehicle will enable people with a disability supported by Leeding Care to enjoy easier access to the community so they may participate in more recreational pursuits and enjoy a greater variety of lifestyle activities.”

Member for Kurwongbah Linda Lavarch said Leeding Care Australia had successfully applied for funding last year, through the Strengthening Non-Government Organisations initiative, to establish two new accommodation houses to support people with a disability.

“Leeding Care received a one-off grant of $33,200 for general establishment costs and recurrent funding of more than $820,000 for a house at Kurwongbah for people with high physical support needs and for another house at Banyo for people with intellectual disabilities,” she said.

“The latest funding allocation is another example of the Queensland Government’s commitment to ensuring that people with a disability have every opportunity to participate in and contribute to their community.”
