MIGRANT WRITERS TO TELL THEIR STORIES ONLINE

Writers from Brisbane’s diverse migrant communities have been invited to tell their stories through the Migrant Communities Writing Pilot Project.

Minister for Multiculturalism Lindy Nelson-Carr said the project was a new initiative by Queensland Writers Centre and the Migrant Education and Cultural Development Association (MECDA) and had received funding from the Queensland Government through Multicultural Affairs Queensland (MAQ)

“The project is a fantastic opportunity to capture and celebrate the stories of migrant writers and will give participants an opportunity to write prose or poetry, perform their work in public and publish it online, Ms Nelson-Carr said.

“Migrants to Queensland come from diverse ethnic backgrounds and contribute to the multiculturalism of our state.

“MAQ has contributed $6,880 towards the project to support the writing and sharing of stories that celebrate Queensland’s cultural diversity.”

Queensland Writers Centre CEO, Kate Eltham said many writers draw upon their culture, personal history and family stories when creating fiction or poetry.

“This project will help novice and aspiring authors as well as those who simply have a personal story to share,” Ms Eltham said.

“A series of free creative writing workshops will assist participants to develop their creative writing skills and to plan and write prose or poetry.

“People of non-English speaking background are encouraged to participate.”

Participants will have an opportunity to perform their written work to a live audience at a community reading at Brisbane Square Library later this year. Works collected from the program will be published online in August.

The Migrant Communities Writing Pilot Project is free to participants but places are limited. To book a place, or to find out further information, contact Queensland Writers Centre on (07) 3839 1243 or visit www.qwc.asn.au
