Attorney-General and Minister for Justice and Minister Assisting the Premier in Western Queensland
The Honourable Kerry Shine
New member of Legal Aid Queensland Board appointed
A new member has been appointed to the Board of Legal Aid Queensland, Attorney-General Kerry Shine said today.
“Chris Callaghan of Callaghan Lawyers is an experienced legal practitioner specialising in criminal law. His appointment complements the existing experience in legal practice management of the Legal Aid Queensland board,” Mr Shine said.
"Mr Callaghan was admitted as a solicitor in 1980 and throughout his legal career has been a passionate advocate committed to ensuring access to the legal system for all people, particularly those from disadvantaged backgrounds.
"He has engaged in pro bono legal work for the Caxton Legal Centre, the Prisoner's Legal service and Sisters Inside and is a current member of the Queensland Law Society's Criminal Law Committee."
Mr Callaghan's appointment fills the vacancy created by the resignation of Tony Rafter SC, who was appointed to the District Court in December last year.
The Board of Legal Aid Queensland is the organisation’s governing body and has five members. Each Board member brings knowledge and experience to the board that helps in the organisation’s management.
The Board is responsible for managing Legal Aid Queensland and determining the organisation’s priorities and strategies.
