The Honourable Robert Schwarten
BOGGO ROAD DEVELOPMENT APPLICATION UNVEILED
The $50 million Boggo Road Urban Village project has achieved a significant milestone, with the Development Application now available for public comment.
Premier Peter Beattie today announced the public notification period for the Boggo Road Gaol site development project would begin on 12 April 2007.
“The Boggo Road Urban Village will be a unique, mixed-use community including residential, retail, commercial, environmental research and recreational facilities,” Mr Beattie said.
“Community consultation and input have helped shape the entire project, and the public notification phase forms an important part of this process.”
The public notification period will run for 30 business days, until 25 May 2007.
“This period will enable community members to find out more about the Development Application lodged with Brisbane City Council and to make a submission to Council if they wish,” Mr Beattie said.
The Development Application seeks to change the use of, and subdivide, the 9.5 hectare former gaol site into smaller lots on which buildings ranging in height from two to nine storeys could be developed in the future.
The plan outlines proposed items such as green space, roads, site services and landscaping, as well as regulations to guide the design of future development.
The Village includes links to the Park Road Train Station and to the proposed Boggo Road Busway at the Park Road Busway Station, on the site’s northern boundary.
Minister for Public Works Robert Schwarten said the heritage-listed Boggo Road Gaol would be retained and become a focal point of the Urban Village, as an important reminder of Queensland’s past.
“The historic No 2 Division Gaol is being retained for educational, cultural and commercial purposes consistent with its heritage significance,” the Minister said.
Site preparation works were completed late last year. Subject to Brisbane City Council approval, infrastructure works, including roads, services and landscaping, are expected to begin on site in the second half of 2007.
The Queensland Government has committed more than $200 million to develop the Ecosciences Precinct at the Village.
Construction of this Precinct is targeted to commence in 2008 and to be completed in 2010. This will be followed by the sale of selected residential and mixed-use sites to the private sector for development.
Mr Schwarten said the Department of Public Works was working closely with Queensland Transport, which is delivering the new Boggo Road Busway, and the Department of State Development, project managers of the Ecosciences Precinct.
Members of the public can find out more about the Boggo Road Urban Village and the Development Application at upcoming public displays.
