Minister for Education and Training and Minister for the Arts
The Honourable Rod Welford
NEW CHAIR FOR PEAK INDIGENOUS EDUCATION ADVISORY BODY
One of Queensland’s most experienced Indigenous teachers has been appointed as the new Chair of a peak community group advising the State and Federal Governments on Indigenous education issues.
Minister for Education and Training, Rod Welford, announced today that Georgina Archer, a secondary teacher at the Brisbane School of Distance Education, had been appointed Chair of the Queensland Indigenous Education Consultative Committee (QIECC).
“Ms Archer brings extensive experience in Indigenous education and advice to education systems and government,” Mr Welford said.
“She has worked in schools, including leadership positions for more than thirty years as well as some experience in systemic support roles to teachers and schools.
“Her teaching career includes appointments at the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Learning and Engagement Centre, Valley School Support Centre and Education Queensland’s central Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Education Unit.
“Ms Archer has a strong background in planning and delivery of strategies, and will be able to provide advice on how proposed strategies and solutions can be implemented.”
Mr Welford also thanked the former Chair, Dr Penny Tripcony, for the leadership, inspiration and dedication to pursuing positive educational outcomes for Indigenous students during her tenure.
QIECC enables Governments to consult with Indigenous communities on education and training issues in Queensland, including pre-school, school, higher education and training.
The Committee provides expert advice to the Queensland and Commonwealth Education Ministers on strategies to improve educational outcomes for Indigenous Queenslanders and the provision of more appropriate and targeted programs.
It also promotes public awareness about Indigenous education issues and strategies among Indigenous people and the wider community, including relevant professionals.
