Premier and Minister for Trade
The Honourable Peter Beattie

PREMIER OPENS WORLD-CLASS MANUFACTURING FACILITY

Queensland is now home to one of the largest corrugating and converting sites in the world, with Premier Peter Beattie officially opening Amcor’s $41 million expansion at Rocklea today.

Mr Beattie said the plant was a great example of smart investment in a smart economy.

“Attracting investment and the jobs it creates to Queensland is one of my Government’s highest priorities and I’m delighted to officially open the $41 million expansion of Amcor’s corrugated box plant,” Mr Beattie said.

“This plant now ranks as one of the largest corrugating and converting sites in the world, employing 350 people and servicing Amcor customers from Darwin to CoffsHarbour,” he said.

Mr Beattie also highlighted the company’s strong focus on water efficiency.

“Amcor reports it has cut its overall water consumption at the plant by 20 per cent and has established a project team to identify additional reductions that can be achieved.

“Big business is making substantial water savings through innovation and efficiency and I congratulate Amcor on its initiative.”

Mr Beattie said the Government was committed to encouraging growth in Queensland’s manufacturing industry.

“Late last year the Office of Advanced Manufacturing was established within the Department of State Development to help SmartState businesses achieve world class capabilities.

“Queensland competes in a global economy, with rapid growth occurring right here in our part of the world - led by China and India.

“To remain competitive with countries that have such low labour costs, we have to work smarter and the Government’s new Office of Advanced Manufacturing will spend $3 million over three years to help manufactures improve productivity & identify and invest in world-class technology, machinery & equipment.

“The Department of State Development is introducing advanced manufacturing advisers at 19 State Development Centres throughout Queensland, as well as a manufacturing and technology support service to cover the state’s north and west.

“The Government will continue to foster and encourage growth in the SmartState’s manufacturing industry and provide support to businesses facing global market challenges,” he said.
