The Honourable Judy Spence

TWIN CITIES’ COMMUNITY SERVICE SITES RECOGNISED

The 20 Community Service sites in Townsville and Thuringowa, and the supervisors who manage them, will be recognised for their efforts in helping community-based offenders get their lives back on track tomorrow .

Corrective Services Minister Judy Spence said community service sites and supervisors were an integral part of Queensland’s Probation and Parole service.

“Around 310 workers performed a total of 13,040 hours of community service in Townsville and Thuringowa in the part 12 months, which amounts to $195,000 in labour,” Ms Spence said.

“Supervisors, many of them volunteers, undertake a range of responsibilities such as the day-to-day supervision of community service workers.

“Their work can also include mentoring and guidance. The supervisors play an important role in giving offenders the opportunity to get their lives back on track.”

Ms Spence said many Queenslanders wouldn’t realise the extent of the community service program across the State, with thousands of workers making reparation to their local community through these orders.

“In the Townsville and Thuringowa area, community service workers provide a wide variety of work from cleaning and general maintenance such as painting, mowing and brushcutting, to revegetation work, graffiti and rubbish removal, meal preparation and caring for abandoned animals,” she said.

“Local organisations benefiting from the work include rehabilitation centres, retirement villages, PCYCs, an animal refuge, and organisations such as the Salvation Army, Blue Nurses and Lifeline.

Non-profit organisations with worthwhile community-based projects that would benefit from offenders completing community-based orders should contact their local Probation and Parole office in Townsville on (07) 4760 7568 or Thuringowa (07) 4726 1666.

The presentation ceremony for community service sites will be held at the Southbank Convention Centre, Palmer Street, South Townsville, starting at 12pm.
