Minister for Mines and Energy
The Honourable Geoff Wilson
Upgrade of Magnetic Island Streetlights
Ergon Energy has completed a comprehensive $30,000 streetlight maintenance and replacement program on Magnetic Island to improve community safety and amenity.
Minister for Mines and Energy Geoff Wilson said contractors recently finished a two week program to repair and replace 400 street lights in suburbs across the island.
“The work is part of Ergon Energy’s major improvement program across Townsville suburbs aimed at refurbishing aged streetlights and to ensure the streetlights meet Australian standards,” Mr Wilson said.
“Some of the streetlights were about 15 years old and were being repaired where possible or replaced with new, more efficient lights,” he said.
Member for Townsville, Mike Reynolds said for safety and access reasons, streetlights were switched on during the day while the replacement work was undertaken by local contractors.
Mr Reynolds said Ergon Energy had advised that the bulk lamp replacement program was best undertaken during daylight and with streetlights on.
“I’m told it’s safer and more efficient to replace them in bulk than in a piecemeal way,” he said.
“I’m delighted the work is finished and that the Magnetic Island community has safer, more secure street lighting,” he said.
