ALLIANCE BEATS STRONG TENDER FIELD

April 2, 2007

South East Queensland’s $8 billion water grid has taken another step forward with the appointment of an alliance to design and build a $98m infrastructure package.

Deputy Premier and Infrastructure Minister Anna Bligh said Water Infrastructure Solutions Alliance, comprising Macmahon Contractors, SMEC Australia and Hydro Tasmania, won the tender for the $15 million Cedar Grove Weir, the $38 million Bromelton Offstream Storage and the proposed $45 million Wyaralong Dam access road.

Ms Bligh said the alliance was a high-calibre team with significant experience in the delivery of weirs and offstream storage facilities. It was shortlisted from a field of nine.

“That’s a strong response to the open market tender given the competitive conditions of the current market,” Ms Bligh said.

“It’s a further sign of the progress being made on the water grid – the largest urban drought response in the history of this nation.

“These projects will improve water supply in drought, help to accommodate growing demand in the Beaudesert area and provide additional supply for the South East Queensland Water Grid.”

She said appointment of the alliance coincided with the first delivery of construction materials for the Cedar Grove Weir.

“On Wednesday, seven trucks delivered approximately 150 metric tonnes of steel sheet pile to the site. A further 90 metric tonnes will be delivered this week, with the remaining 640 tonnes arriving by early May.”

Cedar Grove Weir is on the Logan River, 3km off the Mt Lindesay Highway at Cedar Grove. Bromelton Offstream Storage is located adjacent to the Logan River at Brabazon Road, Bromelton.

The proposed Wyaralong Dam and Cedar Grove Weir will yield 21,000 ML/a, and Bromelton Offstream Storage will have the capacity to deliver an additional yield of 5000 ML/a. Preparatory works for the weir will start in May, with the project due for completion by the end of the year. The Bromelton Offstream Storage will be complete by March 2009, 18 months ahead of target.
