Remembering Larry DVD — an important historical resource
An oral history project that recorded the stories of people in communities affected by Tropical Cyclone Larry has been launched in Babinda today.
Communities Minister Warren Pitt said the Remembering Larry project was a valuable public record of a significant event in the history of far north Queensland.
“Cyclone Larry was one of the biggest cyclones to strike the Australian mainland, causing damage estimated at more than $1 billion,” Mr Pitt said.
“It affected Innisfail, Tully and Babinda and communities across the Atherton Tableland, damaging homes, affecting livelihoods and upending everyday life.
“Although there was significant physical loss, many tales of triumph, courage, mateship and sheer determination have emerged as a result of the cyclone.
“Every man, woman and child who lived through that day has a very personal story to tell of the storm, the first days after, and the many months since.”
The Remembering Larry project, collated by historian Suzanne Gibson, comprises a DVD and a radio documentary, which was broadcast on ABC Far North last week.
“Early on, we recognised the value of allowing residents to tell their stories as part of the recovery process, and to ensure there was a detailed public record,” Mr Pitt said.
“The Remembering Larry DVD includes often-moving interviews with residents and the many government and emergency personnel who helped in the storm’s aftermath.
“There are songs, poems and short stories plus photos, video footage and real-time news accounts of the cyclone, all kindly submitted for the public record.”
The Queensland Government sponsored the production of Remembering Larry DVD, in collaboration with the Australian Broadcasting Corporation.
Contributions were made by the departments of Communities, Emergency Services, Education and the Arts, and the State Library of Queensland.
The Remembering Larry DVD will be available at council libraries across the affected area as well as at the State Library of Queensland.
