Minister for Police and Corrective Services
The Honourable Judy Spence
Police Minister Judy Spence and Commissioner Bob Atkinson have joined Member for Albert Margaret Keech today to open Queensland’s 50th neighbourhood police beat in Jacob’s Well.
Ms Spence said the refurbished facility, developed at a cost of more than $560,000, was part of the State Government’s commitment to creating safer communities.
“The opening of this neighbourhood police beat is great news for the Jacob’s Wells community as it will increase their sense of safety and strengthen local partnerships with police,” Ms Spence said.
“Police beats are an initiative of the State Government and are an effective way of encouraging dialogue between the local police and community.
“They are located where community members can receive information and advice from police or report information or offences.
“They are an effective policing solution to develop crime prevention strategies and foster open communication between police and the local community.”
Ms Spence said the police beat program encouraged the community and police to liaise effectively in order to identify local needs and to ensure that local police understand the particular needs of the community.
“As a result our local police can provide strategic localised policing services to their community,” she said.
Member for Albert Margaret Keech said the Jacob’s Well Police Beat’s area of responsibility included the townships of Jacob’s Well, Cabbage Tree Point and Woongoolba.
“This is a beat with a strong focus on community and cross-service partnerships,” Mrs Keech said.
“For example, often the police beat officer in charge – Senior Constable Mark Avent – will conduct his patrols with the assistance of the Volunteer Marine Rescue staff and Gold Coast Water Police.
“The police beat’s hours of operation will be flexible and dependent on the needs of the local community.”
