The Honourable Peter Beattie
LONDON: One of the United Kingdom’s largest civil engineering consultancy firms has decided to establish a regional headquarters in Queensland, Premier and Minister for Trade Peter Beattie announced today.
Mr Beattie said the decision by the Scott Wilson Group to open a Brisbane office was a huge coup for the Smart State and would attract highly sought after engineering skills to Queensland.
“Scott Wilson is an international consultancy group specialising in development and infrastructure designs in the transportation, property, environment and natural resources sectors,” Mr Beattie said after meeting representatives of the firm in London today.
“The Scott Wilson Group employs more than 5000 staff across 78 internationally located offices and is the foremost UK consultant in the transport and environment sectors operating in China.
“This is a triumph for Queensland and will help address skills shortages in high-tech industries in the State. It also strengthens Queensland’s positioning as a competitive base for regional headquarters.”
Mr Beattie said the Scott Wilson Group would employ 10 local staff initially with an additional 30 staff expected over the coming five years as the company expands its operations.
“The Group will establish a rail office to begin with and will focus its efforts mainly on rail projects for the first two years. It then plans to expand its operations to include other areas such as ports, highways, dams and mining infrastructure,” Mr Beattie said
“Once their workload increases we can expect an increase in their labour requirements to support the expansion – meaning even more skilled jobs for Queenslanders.”
Mr Beattie also announced Queensland company Infohrm’s recent expansion to Europe with plans to establish a permanent presence in London from April 2007.
“Infohrm, which has its headquarters in Milton, specialises in human resources, workforce planning, benchmarking and reporting, and turning information into relevant and usable planning tools,” said the Premier.
“The company already has an impressive UK client list that includes the BT Group, Cadbury Schweppes, InterContinental Hotels, and the Reuters Group.
“It’s also deeply committed to skilling up Queensland’s young workforce, with CEO Peter Howes pledging to create one professional position for every company who joins the Infohrm Program.
“It’s the perfect example of a ‘smart’ Queensland company and I am very pleased the Queensland Government has been able to assist Infohrm realise its strategic expansion in the UK.”
