Communities staff recognised for response to Cyclone Larry
Queensland Department of Communities staff who put their own lives on hold to help in the aftermath of Tropical Cyclone Larry are being recognised for their efforts.
More than 750 departmental staff who contributed to the Tropical Cyclone Larry relief effort in far north Queensland will each get a commemorative pin and certificate from the Operation Recovery Taskforce.
Each certificate carries a message of thanks for, and acknowledgement of, each person’s contribution and is signed by Queensland Premier Peter Beattie and Prime Minister John Howard.
Communities Minister Warren Pitt said the commemorative pins and certificates were being presented to staff in ceremonies across Queensland to thank and acknowledge their voluntary efforts after Cyclone Larry, which struck the north on 20 March 2006.
Mr Pitt said many staff worked longer than 12-hour days during this time, rarely saw family and friends and faced a challenging work environment.
“All departmental staff who helped in the initial weeks after the disaster worked tirelessly in difficult conditions to achieve some wonderful results,” he said.
Department of Communities staff in Cairns who took part in the recovery effort will receive their certificates and commemorative pins from Mr Pitt today.
Ceremonies for staff in Atherton, Innisfail and other centres are also scheduled.
