Youth organisation scores funding boost from government
Queensland’s peak youth organisation will get almost $700,000 from the State Government during the next three years to promote the interests and wellbeing of vulnerable young people.
Youth Minister Warren Pitt said the Youth Affairs Network Queensland (YANQ) would use the $229,338 annual funding to research and provide advice to the government about the impacts of various programs and services on young people.
“YANQ has been representing individuals and organisations from Queensland’s youth sector for nearly 20 years, promoting the interests of young people and protecting their rights and wellbeing,” Mr Pitt said.
“As Queensland’s peak body for marginalised and disadvantaged young people, YANQ plays an extremely important role.
“The triennial funding package will ensure YANQ continues to act as a voice for vulnerable young Queenslanders.”
Mr Pitt said YANQ would provide specific advice on policy issues, programs and service delivery implications, particularly in regard to marginalised young women, young refugees, young carers and Indigenous young people.
“Part of YANQ’s role will also be to work with the sector to identify new and emerging issues and themes for consideration, as well as specific areas of advice in the coming year,” he said.
“The funding will also enable YANQ to continue to collect information through research, consultation and networking with the community youth sector.
“The advice and information the Queensland Government receives from YANQ is instrumental in helping us to develop relevant programs and policies aimed at helping some of the state’s most vulnerable people.
“The government is committed to supporting young Queenslanders to achieve their full potential and to encourage them to help shape the future of this state.”
