PREMIER BEATTIE CONGRATULATES DAEGU ON 2011 WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS IN ATHLETICS

MOMBASA, KENYA: Premier Peter Beattie today offered his congratulations to Daegu (South Korea) following the announcement by the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) that it would host the 2011 World Championships in Athletics.

“While it is disappointing for Brisbane, I am thrilled for the people of Daegu,” Mr Beattie said.

“The World Championships in Athletics are often regarded as the third biggest sporting event on the planet after the Olympics and the FIFA World Cup,” he said.

“Our bid, which was put together by Athletics Australia and Queensland Events Corporation, was very strong and I think our presentation was delivered with great confidence.

“The experience will not be wasted and I think Brisbane would have to be a real contender as a venue for the World Championships in the near future. They are held every two years and we have much to offer.”

Mr Beattie said the event attracts thousands of athletes, officials, IAAF members and delegates and members of the media.

“Hundreds of thousands of spectators will flock to Daegu for a chance to see the world’s greatest athletes in flight, many who will be Australian. Billions more worldwide will watch the event on television,” said the Premier.

“Congratulations to the people of Daegu and those who organised the winning bid. This is an event that will be talked about for many years to come.”
