Boost to supply in Stanthorpe

Ergon Energy has initiated a $750,000 project to significantly improve the quality of electricity supply in rural areas west of Stanthorpe.

Mines and Energy Minister Geoff Wilson said the project would benefit around 1300 Ergon Energy customers served from the McGlew Street feeder out of the Stanthorpe Town Zone Substation.

Mr Wilson said the size of the cable and conductor at the start of the 11,000-volt feeder would be increased to cater for the rise in demand for electricity from customers from Stanthorpe out to Broadwater and Pikedale.

“A regulator will be relocated further out along the line and, together with the improvements at the start of the feeder, this will improve voltage levels in outlying areas,” Mr Wilson said.

“This upgrade also will enable the feeder for rural customers to be split from those serving the town area when the zone substation is upgraded in coming years.”

Mr Wilson said the project was about to enter the design phase and the work should be completed before next summer’s storm season.

“Once operational, it will be able to meet the demands of customers in the area for many years to come,” he said.

“There has been an increasing demand for electricity in the rural areas from irrigators and to run cold stores. This upgrade will meet the needs of today’s farmers as well as allow for expansion in the sector,” Mr Wilson said.
