New pontoon for Trinity Inlet

The identity of the successful tender for the replacement of the Tingira Street pontoon has been announced by Acting Minister for Transport and Main Roads, and Member for Cairns, Desley Boyle.

“I’m happy to reveal Superior Jetties has been awarded the $170,000 contract for the removal and replacement of the popular Portsmith pontoon.

"The existing pontoon has served the Cairns boating community well since being relocated from the old MarlinWharf in 1998, but the time has come for a substantial upgrade.

“It has become one of the busiest pontoons in Trinity Inlet and the replacement will strike a chord with everybody who likes to get out on the water and enjoy the Far North’s unique lifestyle”

Ms Boyle said plans for the pontoon upgrade include a longer, less steep, gangway than that currently provided.

“We’ve chosen a state of the art heavy duty concrete structure coupled with a durable aluminium gangway.

“Work on assembling the new pontoon is expected to start by July, providing all of the necessary approval processes are met.

“The pontoon’s replacement is part of Queensland Transport’s ongoing commitment to providing safe marine recreational facilities for the Far North and delivers on a key election commitment to the Cairns boating community,” Ms Boyle said.

Funding for the project will be allocated from the Beattie Government’s $18 million Smart State Building Fund for Boating Infrastructure.

“Bringing home the catch of the day will become a lot easier,” Ms Boyle said.
