The Honourable John Mickel

Member for Gympie not convinced by Hockey’s WorkChoices spin

Minister for State Development, Employment and Industrial Relations John Mickel has welcomed the courageous decision of the Member for Gympie David Gibson in breaking ranks with his colleagues in Canberra in opposing the federal WorkChoices Legislation.

“I hope his actions begin a trend away from WorkChoices by all his colleagues who regrettably have embraced the unfair WorkChoices to date,” Mr Mickel said.

In a Question on Notice Mr Gibson effectively asked the Minister how he intended to protect some employees in Queensland from WorkChoices.

“I, like many Queenslanders share his concerns that workers in this state will be disadvantaged by WorkChoices and need to be protected by the Queensland jurisdiction,” Mr Mickel said.

“The new Workplace Rights Office will play a significant role in raising public awareness of the harsh impacts of WorkChoices”.

Employees of this new office will be covered by State Industrial laws.

Most Statutory Authorities will remain in the state system as they are not trading corporations.

“Now that the Member for Gympie has seen the light I urge him to impress on his Coalition colleagues the necessity for them to support the Queensland Government position. I look forward to hearing his speech in support of this Bill in the House,” Mr Mickel said.
