Toowoomba: The Queensland Government has entered into a Memorandum of Understanding with ATEC Freight Terminals to sell 27.8 hectares of government-owned industrial land at Charlton for a major intermodal freight terminal, Acting Premier Anna Bligh announced today.

Ms Bligh, who is in Toowoomba today to officially open the 143rd Heritage Toowoomba Show, said the MOU enables both parties to begin negotiations in earnest for the sale of the land so ATEC can develop a 2-kilometre long rail siding.

“South East Queensland is one of the fastest growing regions in Australia and Toowoomba is very much a part of that,” Ms Bligh said.

“Charlton is well located to take advantage of its access to the Warrego Highway and will ultimately connect with the proposed Toowoomba Bypass.”

Ms Bligh said ATEC’s proposed terminal would connect to the adjoining rail infrastructure.

ATEC is also part of a consortium the Beattie Government has granted a conditional exclusive mandate to for investigating the development of the $1 billion plus Surat Basin Railway - formerly know as the Dawson Valley Railway.

The consortium is investigating a project which will open the coal rich Surat Basin with a new 207 km rail line from Wandoan to Banana allowing access to the Port of Gladstone.

Mr John Dornbusch, chairman of ATEC Freight Terminals, said the development would enhance employment and commercial activity for the region.

"The MOU is a great step forward toward the development of our major intermodal freight terminal,” he said.
