Minister for Health
The Honourable Stephen Robertson

Taroom Shire Cancer and Palliative Care Group will have a permanent home after the Beattie Government agreed to gift the former Taroom Nursing Quarters to the organisation, Health Minister Stephen Robertson announced today.

Mr Robertson said Queensland Health will also fund about $16,000 in costs associated with the subdivision of land, transfer of property title and professional fees.

“Taroom Shire Cancer and Palliative Care Group provide a valuable community service by supporting the families of patients in hospital care,” he said.

“They made a convincing case for additional accommodation for families of patients at the Taroom Health Service and that’s why I am pleased to gift this facility. Once renovated, the centre will be able to accommodate up to five families.”

Mr Robertson said the Taroom Nursing Quarters was vacated more than three years ago and declared surplus to Queensland Health needs in April last year.

“The former nursing quarters is located on the Taroom Base Hospital site and will ensure relatives can be close to patients while they undergo treatment at the hospital,” he said.

“The facility will also be used for support group meetings such as diabetic groups, carers and cancer counselling.

“This is a great example of what can be achieved when the government and community organisations work together to support local families.”

Taroom Shire Cancer and Palliative Care Group president Maureen Williams said the new building would benefit the whole Taroom community.

“We desperately needed somewhere for the community to stay when they have family in hospital,” she said.

“Now that we have a permanent home, our accommodation and support service will be able to continue long into the future.”

Mr Robertson said Taroom Shire Cancer and Palliative Care Group were expected to move into their new building in April.
