Minister for Transport and Main Roads
The Honourable Paul Lucas
Work starts on next section of North Ward Road
Construction will start after Easter on widening the next section of North Ward Road to four lanes, Parliamentary Secretary for Main Roads, Andrew McNamara, announced today.
"The state government is providing $15 million for this project, as part of a progressive upgrade of the road over the next few years," Mr McNamara said.
"Work has just begun to re-locate water mains and sewerage pipes from the roadside, in preparation for the widening work."
North Ward Road is the name used locally for Denham, Eyre, Warburton, Bundock, Percy and Hugh Streets.
Mr McNamara said the current project involved widening between Ingham Road and William Street to four lanes, on the Hugh and Percy Streets section of North Ward Road.
"This is the most heavily used section of road, carrying some 20,000 vehicles a day, so it is being upgraded first.
"North Ward Road is an important arterial route which connects the western suburbs to The Strand and the city."
Mr McNamara said a consortium made up of Seymour Whyte Pty Ltd and Flanagan Consultants was carrying out the work, under contract to Main Roads.
"Widening on this section will finish later this year with work then to start on the section between Gregory Street and Heatley's Parade, along Warburton Street."
A section near the Landsborough/Warburton Streets intersection was recently upgraded to four lanes at a cost of $2.8 million.
