Halfway milestone for fast tracked Dawson Highway

Construction crews have reached the halfway mark in the $64 million dollar upgrade of the Dawson Highway between Calliope and Banana.

Parliamentary Secretary for Main Roads, Andrew McNamara, said the first 35 kilometre section of the highway between Biloela and Banana is now complete with crews now working on the remaining section between Biloela and Calliope.

“The completed section is much wider, it offers a smoother ride with better visibility at approaches to intersections and private driveways.

“We’ve also replaced two old timber bridges at Zamia and Clovernook Creeks with harder wearing concrete structures, they’re now open to traffic, and there are five remaining crossings earmarked for upgrade in this next stage of works.”

Mr McNamara said progress on the Dawson Highway demonstrates Main Roads' Accelerated Road Rehabilitation Program in action, which is fast-tracking the upgrade of roads and replacement of old bridges in Central and Southern Queensland.

Work on the remaining 36 kilometres of the Dawson Highway project between Biloela and Calliope is expected to be finished by the end of the year.

“But already Main Roads is making good progress on improving safety and driving conditions on this important section of highway,” Mr McNamara said.
