Minister for Police and Corrective Services
The Honourable Judy Spence

NEW PROBATION AND PAROLE OFFICE FOR BEENLEIGH

Corrective Services Minister Judy Spence today welcomed in a new era for parole and probation in the Beenleigh area.

Ms Spence officially opened the new $605,000 Probation and Parole office in Beenleigh, which will be used to supervise offenders who are on parole.

“This office employs 11 staff who supervise 280 offenders on a variety of orders, including community service, probation and parole orders,” Ms Spence said.

“It is one of more than 30 Probation and Parole Offices operating across the state, delivering tough new supervision and surveillance of those serving sentences in the community.

“Last year, local offenders on community service orders completed over 9,000 hours of community service work worth $135,000 at sites including the Beenleigh Historical Village and the Beenleigh Showgrounds.

“This is work that these local groups would not have been able to afford and it’s always good when programs like this can give something worthwhile back to the community.

“The work also provides the opportunity for offenders to make reparation to the community and to develop skills and work ethic.”

Ms Spence was given a tour of the new Probation and Parole office, which has been fitted with enhanced security features.

“High security is a major priority, which is why the office is secured with a security alarm system, proximity door readers, duress alarms and a CCTV surveillance system,” Ms Spence said.

“The office also features a secure reception counter, three interview rooms with separate staff and offender entrances, a programs delivery room and urinalysis facilities.”

Ms Spence said the new Beenleigh office was among more than 30 of these types of offices across the state which will help deliver the biggest change in parole and probation in Queensland in more than 15 years.
