Minister for Transport and Main Roads
The Honourable Paul Lucas
Commuters travelling between Townsville and MagneticIsland have been assured fast and reliable ferry services will continue with the signing of a new contract.
Queensland Transport has awarded the seven-year contract to Sunferries to operate the passenger ferry service to MagneticIsland.
Acting Transport and Main Roads Minister, Desley Boyle, said the contract would ensure services keep pace with the continuing population growth on the island.
“Research showed locals were happy with Sunferries, so we’re confident they will continue to satisfy the transport needs of the island community,” Ms Boyle said.
“We’re also certain Sunferries can keep up with growth due to their plans to further improve services following a 4.8 per cent increase in passenger travel in 2005-06 to more than 780,000 journeys.”
“Sunferries has made a major investment in upgrading services, with the purchase of two brand new super-ferries costing $7.8 million, and a $1 million upgrade of the Townsville terminal.
“The new super-ferries cruise at 30 knots in open waters – that's 7 knots faster than the old ones. As a result, Sunferries is working on overhauling timetables to provide faster travel times, including at least one extra service, for passengers.
“Queensland Transport will work with Sunferries to ensure services continue to meet community needs for the next seven years,” Ms Boyle said.
Sunferries operates a comprehensive timetable seven days a week. On weekdays, Sunferries provides 14 regular services, with the first trip from the island leaving at 6.20am and the last trip back to the island leaving Townsville at 10.30pm.
There are later trips on Friday and Saturday nights, leaving the city at 11.35pm.
“Over the past five years, the State Government's contribution through concession fares increased by 50 per cent, and is now just under $500,000 a year," Ms Boyle said.
“The population growth in Townsville and MagneticIsland, and the region’s increasing attraction for tourists, mean the need for efficient and comfortable ferry services will continue to increase.”
“This new contract makes provision to ensure that patronage levels are monitored and services are upgraded as required to meet demand.
“This contract is a major milestone for ferry services in the twin cities and very good news for the people of MagneticIsland in particular,” Ms Boyle said.
