QUEENSLAND SCHOOL SOFTBALL STARS VIE FOR STATE HONOURS
School softball stars from across the state will put their skills to the test in Cairns for the Queensland School Sport Softball Championships at the end of this month.
Education and Training Minister, Rod Welford, today congratulated the secondary school students, aged 19 years and under, on their selection in the regional teams.
“These girls have shown great skill and talent in the regional trials and I wish them every success when they represent their regions at the state competition," Mr Welford said.
"There will be around 130 students competing at the four-day event, which will be held at the Cairns Softball Association grounds at Parramatta Park from Saturday 24 March to Tuesday 27 March.
“Regional teams will be split into two pools and will play round-robin games with the top two teams qualifying for the Grand Final.”
The sporting regions being represented at this year's championships include: Peninsula, Northern, Capricornia, WideBay, Darling Downs, Metropolitan West, Metropolitan East, Metropolitan North, Sunshine Coast and South Coast.
Mr Welford said the event provided a great opportunity for the young athletes to compete at a high level while meeting and sharing experiences with their peers from across the state.
At the conclusion of the championships a Queensland team will be named to compete in the School Sport Australia Softball Championships in Perth this May.
