Minister for Child Safety
The Honourable Desley Boyle

Child advocacy group the CREATE Foundation have moved their Queensland headquarters to Highgate Hill.

Child Safety Minister Desley Boyle officially opened the new office for the organisation which represents the interests of children and young people in care.

“There are more than 6800 children in care in Queensland because they’ve been neglected or abused or are at risk of being harmed in their own homes,” Ms Boyle said.

“These kids have had a tough time and it is terrific that there is a special group looking out for them.

“The CREATE Foundation does fantastic work. It holds focus groups so children in care can have their say on things the Department could do better or differently, such as permanency planning.

“It trains young people aged 11-22 who are in care or have been in care so they can be “Young Consultants” and run activities for other foster children.

“This gives them confidence and leadership skills and, in turn, they give support to younger children in care.

“CREATE also put on fun events like sports matches or Christmas parties for children in care to get together.”

The Foundation has moved to Highgate Hill after its former premises in Coorparoo changed owners.

The Department of Child Safety provides over $475,000 each year to CREATE and provided an extra $20,000 to help set-up the new office.

“The new office has room for six staff and a meeting space where young people can get together to work on projects. It’s also close to public transport so they can get there easily,” Ms Boyle said.
