SUNSHINE COAST PROVES A TOURISM FAVOURITE WITH SYDNEYSIDERS

Sydneysiders are flocking to the Sunshine Coast, boosting tourism in the region by 11 per cent last year, Tourism Minister Margaret Keech announced today.

Mrs Keech said the latest National Visitor Survey results showed the region’s popularity was growing with visitors from all over NSW.

“In an excellent result there was a strong 13 per cent increase in visitation from the entire New South Wales market,” she said.

“The growth in this important market has significantly contributed to making the Sunshine Coast Australia’s ninth highest domestic tourism expenditure region.

“Domestic tourism expenditure for the SunshineCoast totalled more than $1.4 billion last year, including airfares and long distance transport costs.

“The Sunshine Coast is truly one of Queensland’s most breathtaking holiday regions.

“Holidaymakers account for 62 per cent of all domestic visitors to the region.”

Sunshine Coast Tourism CEO John Fitzgerald said the strong increase being seen in this key domestic market was a tribute to the region's united tourism industry.

“Sunshine Coast Tourism continues to work in partnership with Tourism Queensland and industry to deliver strong economic returns for the local region.

“Tourism is an important industry for the Sunshine Coast and by working together the region can continue grow within Queensland and interstate,” he said.
