INNISFAIL EVENT SET TO BE A ‘FEAST OF THE SENSES’

A magnificant display of far north Queensland’s large variety of tropical fruit will feature at the Feast of the Sense’s Market Day Extravaganza at Innisfail.

“The Department of Primary Industries and Fisheries is preparing a stunning display to showcase tropical fruit from bananas and citrus fruits to rare varieties such as black sapote and mangosteens,” Minister for Primary Industries and Fisheries Tim Mulherin said today.

“More and more people have found the mangosteen lives up to its reputation as the Queen of Tropical Fruits and many home chefs are learning more about the versatility of breadfruit, black sapote, durian and dragonfruit.

“Connoisseurs are discovering these fruits through the range of tropical fruit wines being produced at a growing number of wineries around far north Queensland.”

Mr Mulherin said a key part of the Feast of the Senses was the Market Day Extravaganza which promotes value-added industries as well as primary produce in one of the most productive agricultural and horticultural districts in Australia.

“The event, especially the market day, has become a tourist attraction in its own right bringing hundreds of visitors to Innisfail to soak up the tropical atmosphere and see what’s on offer.

”This year’s event will be a celebration of the region’s recovery from Cyclone Larry one year ago.

“Queensland’s primary industries are vital to our economy and it is amazing what everyone involved has achieved since Cyclone Larry devastated the region during last year’s Feast of the Senses.”

DPI&F’s South Johnstone Research Station manager Pedro O’Connor, one of the founders of the Feast of the Senses four years ago, and his DPI&F colleagues will be available at the fruit display to answer any questions from the public.

The Market Day Extravaganza will be held in Innisfail’s Central Business District on Sunday, March18 from 9am to 3pm. The day includes cooking with celebrity chefs, workshops and displays, street art, music and dancing.

The Feast of the Senses Gala dinner, catered for by Jagads Epicurean Emporium, will be held the night before at the Riverside Tavern.
