The Honourable Kerry Shine
Almost half of former Patel patient compensation claims settled
Almost half of the compensation claims lodged by former patients of Jayant Patel have been settled, Attorney-General Kerry Shine said today.
Mr Shine, who met with former patients and their families in Bundaberg last night, said the compensation claims were being settled through the Special Process established by the Government to provide fair and reasonable compensation for the former Patel patients.
“I was able to report at the meetings that 189 of the 383 claims have now been settled. That is almost half of the total claims,” Mr Shine said.
“Another 12 claims are either in mediation or to be mediated in the week starting 28 March.”
Claimants are eligible for their claim to be considered under the Special Process if they are a former Patel patient and have endured an adverse outcome.
Mr Shine said 48 claims were currently considered ineligible. Another three claims considered ineligible are being re-examined.
“I urge any of those 48 claimants to provide any additional information to support their claim. The government is also committed to considering claims from patients who do not have an adverse outcome at the time but develop medical problems in the future,” Mr Shine said.
