The redevelopment of Ingham Hospital gets underway today with construction to begin on new staff accommodation.

Acting Health Minister Desley Boyle said local contractor AJ Homes Pty Ltd will build the $4.5 million project.

Ms Boyle said the first stage of construction includes new staff accommodation, a temporary dental unit and refurbishments to provide temporary accommodation for community health services.

“The staff accommodation will include seven residential buildings: three one-bedroom residences, three two-bedroom residences and one three-bedroom residence,” she said.

“This new accommodation will provide quality housing to help Queensland Health attract and retain clinical staff for the local community.”

Ms Boyle said once the new staff accommodation is completed, the current staff quarters will be demolished and a new hospital and medical centre built on the site.

“The old staff accommodation was dedicated to Dr Gordon Morrissey, a long-serving doctor in the area.

“His contribution to the community will be remembered with a plaque on the new staff accommodation.”

Ms Boyle said stage one was part of a $22.1 million commitment to revitalise Ingham’s health infrastructure.

“The new Ingham Hospital will provide 32 beds and and a range of services including acute care services for medical and aged patients and some general surgery.

“Through this redevelopment our doctors and nurses will be able treat local patients with much better facilities in a much more modern environment.”

The Ingham Health Service covers almost 3,000 square kilometres and more than 15 thousand people.

Ms Boyle said stage one of the redevelopment was expected to be completed in August.
