Minister for Transport and Main Roads
The Honourable Paul Lucas

PARADISE FOUND – AHEAD OF TIME AND UNDER BUDGET

The ribbon has been cut and the first trucks flagged onto the new $34 million Paradise Road interchange by Premier Peter Beattie and Minister for Transport and Main Roads, Paul Lucas.

It signals the official opening of a shorter, more efficient connection to the Logan Motorway for the booming Larapinta industrial estate.

“This interchange is being delivered ahead of time and under budget,” Mr Beattie said.

“It has the potential to become the catalyst for thousands of jobs and that’s great news for industry and the local community.

“And it’s already delivering. Woolworths is the first to take advantage of the easy transport access with a new distribution centre employing 1200 workers up and running by the end of the month.”

Mr Beatie said $36 million was intially budgeted for the interchange with an anticipated April 2007 delivery date, but drier weather conditions and an alliance contract with BMD Major Projects and Maunsell AECOM, had led to significant savings in time and money.

Mr Lucas said the challenging project was coordinated by Main Roads and Queensland Motorways.

“To bring the interchange in ahead of time and $2 million under budget is a real achievement when you realise the project also includes electronic tolling facilities and complex bridgework under the interstate rail line,” Mr Lucas said.

“The Paradise Road Interchange will remove heavy transport from suburban streets and for the first time give B-double trucks quick and easy access to the Larapinta industrial area.

“It is a win for industry, truck drivers and the local community,” Mr Lucas said.

The Paradise Road Interchange works included:
• An extension of the existing Paradise Road overbridge;
• On and off-ramps from the Logan Motorway to Paradise Road;
• Traffic signalis at ramp intersections to Paradise Road;
• A new bridge under the existing railway line; and
• Toll plazas on new east bound on-ramp and west bound off-ramp.

Prior to construction of the new Interchange large trucks had no choice but to use local suburban streets to access the Larapinta industrial compex from the Logan Motorway’s Stapylton Road or Beaudesert Road interchanges.

Mr Beattie said the delivery of the Paradise Road Interchange in less than 12 months is another example of the Government delivering on major road infrastructure projects to meet the demands of both the community and business.

“A second bridge over the Logan Motorway is on the drawing board and will be built as traffic increases,” he said.
