TAKE THE HEADACHE OUT OF INSTALLING A RAINWATER TANK

Save water without losing money by doing your homework when buying a rainwater tank, says Fair Trading Minister Margaret Keech.

Mrs Keech said installing a rainwater tank was great way to save precious water but such a major purchase deserved thorough research.

“A rainwater tank is a valuable investment as we try to cope with Queensland’s worst drought on record,” Mrs Keech said.

“Rainwater tanks help you save on your water bill. Statistics show that Queenslanders use 50 per cent of household water for the garden and other outdoor uses such as washing the car or topping up the swimming pool.

“Surprisingly we only consume about 2 per cent of our water.

“Rainwater tanks are not a small investment. The cost of a 5,000 litre tank can range between $1,000 - $4,000, so it pays to shop around.

“Prices are influenced by size, shape, the tank’s material, location of the tank and any site preparations that may be required.”

Mrs Keech said the price of products could also be driven by supply and demand.

“Installation costs may also vary depending on what the water is used for,” she said.

“If you want to use the water for your washing machine (cold water tap) or toilet you will need a plumber to connect your tank to the mains supply.

“You should also check with your local council to see if there are any building permits, approvals or regulations that may apply,” said Mrs Keech.

The Office of Fair Trading recommends people:

• shop around for the best price;
• get at least one, or preferably three or more written, detailed quotes;
• negotiate on price as most traders would try and beat a competitor’s price to win your business;
• ensure all aspects of the job, for example delivery, site preparation, installation, connecting overflows to storm water drains, taps and fittings, are included in the written quote to avoid any nasty surprises in costs when the work is complete;
• read and understand all terms and conditions of the quote/contract before signing. If you’re not sure what something means, ask for an explanation;
• ensure the tradesperson knows not to proceed with any work or additions/alterations before getting your authority; and
• make sure that your plumber is licensed with the Queensland Building Services Authority by calling 1300 272 272.
