Premier and Minister for Trade
The Honourable Peter Beattie

FAR-NORTH QUEENSLAND LOOKS BEYOND MARCH 20: PREMIER

Premier Peter Beattie today announced there would be official commemoration of the first anniversary of Cyclone Larry.

“This is a chance to recognise the thousands of people right across the region who continue the hard work of rebuilding the communities affected by the cyclone almost a year ago,” Mr Beattie said.

“There’s more work to be done but this event will acknowledge the achievements of non-government and government organisations,” he said.

The event, a luncheon in Innisfail, will be co-hosted by the Queensland and Commonwealth governments.

Attending will be Emergency Services Minister Pat Purcell, Communities Minister Warren Pitt, General Peter Cosgrove, members of the Cyclone Larry Operation Recovery Taskforce and representatives of more than 100 organisations.

Mr Beattie said while the Taskforce will meet for the last time on March 20, services and assistance will continue to be provided by the State Government and others to ensure the recovery process continues.

General Cosgrove will be visiting the area between March 17 and March 21 to join commemoration activities and attend the Feast of the Senses celebrations.

Among other events planned by communities for the anniversary week are displays, exhibitions, meetings and sausage sizzles, as well as an open faith service.

A community book called Taken by Storm will also be launched. It features stories about Cyclone Larry from many people in different areas including on the Atherton Tablelands, Silkwood, Mission Beach, Cairns and beyond.

“The anniversary of Cyclone Larry marks a time when the community of Far North Queensland should be praised for their courage and resilience during the past 12 months,” said the Premier.

“On 20 March, I encourage all Queenslanders to take a moment to remember the impact Cyclone Larry had on the community and all those who took part in the heroic relief effort – they deserve our praise.”
