TANK STREET BRIDGE DESIGN UNVEILED
The exciting landmark design chosen for the second footbridge across the Brisbane River will rival the best in the world, Premier Peter Beattie said today.
Premier Beattie announced construction company Baulderstone Hornibrook Queensland Pty Ltd as the preferred tenderer to design and construct the Tank Street Bridge. Local design/engineering consultants Cox Rayner/Arup form part of the company’s design team.
The new bridge will link Brisbane city to the new Millennium Arts Precinct at the Queensland Cultural Centre, completing a pedestrian and cycle loop between the city and South Bank via the Goodwill Bridge.
“It will be another example of a world-class outcome delivered by Queensland specialists in the construction industry,” Mr Beattie said.
“This inspired design by a local team will catch the attention of architects, engineers and civic leaders around the world and will fire the imaginations of people everywhere.
“Their multiple-mast, cable-stay design for the new Tank Street Bridge is a work of great imagination, an artistic array of cables and flying struts recalling the ropes and spars of sailing ships and boats.
“It will be instantly recognisable as one of the greatest urban elements of a progressive, innovative city.”
Mr Beattie said the bridge’s elegant design would sit well with the new Gallery of Modern Art and Kurilpa Point.
“The new bridge will provide an instantly-recognisable synergy between architecture, structure and art that is highly responsive to the siting beside the new Millennium Arts Precinct,” he said.
Offering expansive views of the river, the bridge will feature viewing and relaxation platforms, two rest areas, and a continuous all-weather canopy for the entire length of the bridge.
Public Works Minister Robert Schwarten said the Tank Street Bridge initiative followed the enormous success of the Goodwill Bridge, which is used by more than 53,000 people every week.
Mr Schwarten said subject to satisfactory final negotiations, construction work on the new Tank Street Bridge was expected to start by mid-2007.
“We want the bridge completed two years after construction commences, in time for Queensland’s 150th birthday celebrations” he said.
During the early stages of the project and after contract negotiations are finalised, it is intended to conduct a public naming competition for the bridge.
A model of the new bridge is displayed for public comment in the Executive Building foyer, 100 George Street.
