Conference to highlight SEQ Regional Plan best practice

Monday 5 March 2007

Planning for the future of Australia’s fastest growing region – South East Queensland - will be the focus of a two-day conference on the Gold Coast starting today (Monday).

Deputy Premier, Treasurer and Minister for Infrastructure, Anna Bligh, said the conference Living Smarter: The future for South East Queensland would focus on the South East Queensland Regional Plan and its implementation by bringing together local, interstate and international specialists.

“Implementation of the SEQ Regional Plan is critical to managing growth in our region over the next 20 years and we have to get it right,” Ms Bligh said.

“With SEQ’ tipped to top 4 million people by 2026, we must ensure that we preserve its unique qualities such as our magnificent environment, beautiful coastal regions and waterways, strong economy, and our love of open spaces and outdoor recreation.

“The SEQ Regional Plan guides the future planning decisions of State and local governments and will shape the way in which South East Queensland grows over the next two decades.”

Ms Bligh said the conference, to be held on the Gold Coast on 5 and 6 March, comes at a crucial time for local governments who are currently developing their Local Growth Management Strategies – as required under the SEQ Regional Plan.

“By developing their Local Growth Management Strategies, local governments are taking the SEQ Regional Plan and implementing it at the local level, demonstrating how they can meet the challenges presented by our growing population and protect our great south east.

“Through smart planning and urban design we can ensure we contain urban sprawl and protect our natural environments, open spaces and rural industries for the future.”

Ms Bligh is to address the conference tomorrow (Tuesday).

Keynote speakers, such as Gordon Price from Canada and Robert Cervero from the United States, will provide an international perspective on best practice in urban planning and transit oriented developments, while Perth Urban Strategist in Residence Charles Landry will provide a snapshot of the use of culture in city revitalisation, cultural planning and heritage issues.

Speakers from state and local government, as well as the planning industry, will provide a key forum for sharing and creating understanding of the SEQ Regional Plan’s policies and the processes for urban planning at the local level.

Living Smarter: The future for South East Queensland will be held at the Surfers Paradise Marriott Resort on 5 and 6 March 2007. visit www.oumconference2007.com.au.
