$20,000 FELLOWSHIP OPENS FOR QUEENSLAND SONGWRITERS

The legacy of the late singer-songwriter Grant McLennan will live on through a new fellowship to be awarded to a talented Queensland-based songwriter in July, Premier Peter Beattie announced today.

Applications for the inaugural $20,000 Grant McLennan Memorial Fellowship are now open.

“As a founding member of the internationally successful Brisbane band The Go-Betweens in the late ‘70s, Grant created an outstanding musical legacy which has paved the way for many great artists,” Mr Beattie said.

“His lyrics captured a unique Queensland voice and the band was fundamental in taking Australian music to a global audience.

“While Grant loved Australia, he found inspiration in travelling and performing overseas and absorbing the music and cultures of the world’s great cities.

“This Fellowship reflects Grant’s belief that exposure to other cultures can be an invaluable creative influence, and that’s why the recipient will be able to choose to stay in London, New York or Berlin as part of the award.

“On returning to Queensland, they will be required to give a legacy item which symbolises their experience abroad and it will go into the new Grant McLennan Archive which will be housed and exhibited at the State Library of Queensland.

“The item might be a Fellowship diary, recordings, lyrics or a meaningful object, and it will become part of the State Library’s permanent collection.”

The Fellowship was developed by the Queensland Government in consultation with the McLennan family and The Go-Betweens co-founder Robert Forster.

“I look forward to hearing the songs gathered from throughout Queensland, and making what is going to be a very difficult decision of choosing the first Fellowship recipient," Mr Forster said.

Mr Beattie said the Fellowship would create a legacy over time that recognised the breadth of talent in Queensland, and the McLennan family was especially keen for regional songwriters to apply.

Applications close Friday, March 30, with the first Fellowship recipient to be announced in July. For guidelines and applications, visit the Arts Queensland website www.arts.qld.gov.au or call (07) 3224 4896 or 1800 175 531.
