Community centre receives $150,000 to improve facilities
The East Brisbane Community Centre will receive $150,000 in Queensland Government funding to improve disability access and complete urgent renovations.
Deputy Premier and Member for South Brisbane Anna Bligh said the one-off funding would allow the centre to upgrade its premises while ensuring ongoing support to its clients.
“For nearly 30 years, the East Brisbane Community Centre has delivered health, welfare and recreation services, playgroups and education courses to its diverse clientele,” Ms Bligh said.
“The not-for-profit community centre can now carry out much-needed renovations and improvements to its Vulture Street facility, including an access path and toilet for people with a disability.”
Communities and Disability Services Minister Warren Pitt said the Department of Communities currently provided funding of $90,717 a year to the East Brisbane Community Centre for its services, as well as $7148 a year for its Children’s Activity Program for School Aged Care.
Mr Pitt said the renovation and disability access upgrade would enable the East Brisbane Community Centre to better cope with the increasing demand for services in Brisbane’s growing inner suburbs.
“The centre’s aim is to build a stronger community by strengthening families and individuals and this is very much in line with the Department of Communities’ vision,” he said.
