Grants boost Northern Queensland groups

A total of 40 community projects are set to share $158,250 thanks to the 38th round of grants from the Breakwater Island Casino Community Benefit Fund, Deputy Premier, Treasurer and Minister for Infrastructure Anna Bligh announced today.
“With grants allocated in this latest round, arts associations, health support groups and sporting clubs will receive the financial boost needed to complete their projects, helping organisations to help their own communities,” Ms Bligh said.
“Grants support the work of not-for-profit groups, which in turn enable communities to thrive and grow, strengthening the networks between community members.
“It’s great to see that the $4,545 granted to Guides Queensland in Charters Towers to repair its Guides hut will mean a great improvement in facilities for the group.”
Ms Bligh said that providing grants through the Fund was just one of the ways the Queensland Government ensures that on balance the State benefits from gambling activities.
Grant recipients include:
• River of Life Fellowship Mackay Inc Install freezer room $11,570
• Muscular Dystrophy Association of Qld Purchase Hi-Lo electric adjustable bed $4,880
• Australian-Italian Festival Association Purchase office equipment $2,474
Established by the Queensland Government in 1987, the Fund services an area that includes Hinchinbrook, Sarina, Mackay and Mount Isa.
Funding is sourced from a levy placed on the gaming revenue of the Jupiters Casino in Townsville.
Since the Fund began, more than $4.4 million has been distributed to 1,323 North Queensland-based projects.
Breakwater Island Casino Community Benefit Fund Chairperson Councillor Les Tyrell said the Fund assisted not-for-profit groups achieve their aims and maintain a strong presence in communities.
“Eligible organisations in North Queensland looking for funding for items or capital expenditure are encouraged to apply, and there are two rounds of funding distributed each year,” he said.
“Applications close in April and October.”
