POLICE MINISTER OPENS HALIFAX POLICE STATION

The new Halifax Police Station has been officially opened by Police and Corrective Services Minister, Judy Spence.

The $590,000 prefabricated station replaces the old station that was built more than 110 years ago to house Halifax’s first police officer in 1888.

Ms Spence, who was joined by Police Commissioner Bob Atkinson at the official opening, said the new facility will provide upgraded facilities to help meet the needs of modern day policing in the area.

“Police in Halifax service the district’s 3,000 residents and a range of diverse industries,” Ms Spence said.

“These are great new facilities for the two police officers and one civilian staff member based here.

“Halifax has a proud history of policing and is one of the oldest towns in the area.

“The current residence of the Officer in Charge is reported to be the birth place of a former Australian Prime minister, when his father was the local officer there.

“Sir Arthur Fadden was born at the residence on April 13, 1895 and served as Prime Minister between August and October 1941 after the resignation of then Prime Minister, Sir Robert Menzies.”

At the official opening, Ms Spence congratulated Officer in Charge Sergeant Ian Hamilton, who was presented with his 30 year Queensland Police Service Medal clasp for diligent and ethical service at the ceremony.

Ms Spence said the new station highlighted the Beattie Government’s commitment to provide police with the tools, resources and infrastructure required to best meet the policing needs in their local communities.
