Minister for Police and Corrective Services
The Honourable Judy Spence

Police Minister Judy Spence has today officially opened the Ingham police station.

Ms Spence said the station, which cost almost $5 million, is providing police with modern facilities and infrastructure to meet their needs now and in the future.

“This station has replaced the old station which was originally built in 1915 as the Ingham Court House,” Ms Spence said.

“It is believed that police started using the building sometime before it became known as the Ingham Police Station in 1955.

“The new facility is a vast improvement on the old station, and is providing police with improved working conditions to best assist them serve the needs of the 12,000 residents of the Hinchinbrook Shire.

“Ingham has a population of 5000 and is fortunate to have generally low overall local crime rates, including a very low rate of property crime.

“Anecdotally, police say the majority of their work is responding to disturbances and domestic disputes, and place significant focus on traffic enforcement as the Bruce Highway cuts through the area.”

Ms Spence said the Ingham station, which has been operational since late 2005, provides a 24-hour policing presence and accommodates 17 uniformed officers along with two CIB officers, one traffic officer, two police liaison officers and three administrative assistants.

During the ceremony, Officer in Charge of Ingham station, Senior Sergeant Eric Darby received his 30 year Queensland Police Service Medal clasp for diligent and ethical service. Six other local officers, including three sergeants, one detective sergeant and two senior constables were also presented with Queensland Police Service medals or relevant clasps.
