BEST AND BRIGHTEST SOUGHT FOR NEW $43.5M GOLD COAST ACADEMY

Talented high school students wanting to pursue careers in the health and allied health industries are being invited to apply for places at Queensland’s latest Smart Academy.

Premier Peter Beattie said expressions of interest are now being called for the new $43.5 million academy which will open it doors in 2008.

The academy is a partnership with Griffith University and is aligned with its Medical, Dental and Allied Health Faculty.

“The academy will accelerate opportunities for Queensland’s best and brightest students interested in becoming tomorrow’s doctors, dentists, physiotherapists and other health professionals,” Mr Beattie said.

“Like the two Brisbane-based academies that opened to students this year, the new academy will provide students with the opportunity to combine their senior schooling with tertiary studies, fast track their qualifications and gain invaluable work experience,” he said.

“It will also train more health professionals for Queensland jobs.”

Students entering Years 10 and 11 next year are welcome to apply. Students will be selected via testing and an interview.

Education and Training Minister Rod Welford said interested students and their parents are encouraged to attend an information session at the Robina Community Centre on Tuesday, 6 March.

“Griffith University is recognised as having extensive expertise in biomedical, clinical and healthcare research,” Mr Welford said.

“Academy students will reap enormous benefits from this partnership, including course credit arrangements, involvement with university staff and access to resources and facilities.

“The academy itself will have excellent facilities to support student learning, such as a state-of-the-art auditorium, science and language laboratories and personal technology devices equipped with specialised software.”

The information session about the new academy will be held at 7pm at the Robina Community Centre on Tuesday, 6 March. To reserve a space, call 07 3235 9072 or email: eventregistration@deta.qld.gov.au

Expressions of interest in attending the academy can be lodged through the Queensland Academies website www.qldacademies.eq.edu.au, with registration to sit the selection test closing on April 19. Applicants will sit the selection test in May.

Applications are also now open for students wishing to enter the Science, Mathematics and Technology Academy and Creative Industries Academy for the 2008 school year.
