Post School Services disability forum held at Currumbin
Disability service providers, educators and parents of young people with a disability gathered at Currumbin Community Special School today to discuss possible improvements to Disability Services Queensland’s Post School Services program.
The Minister for Disability Services, Warren Pitt, said the forum discussed ways to assist young school-leavers to make a successful transition from school life to adult life
“It was an excellent opportunity for us all to sit down and discuss the strong points and potential improvements to the Post School Services program,” Mr Pitt said.
“A number of constructive ideas were raised which will be evaluated to determine how they might contribute to a more positive future for students leaving the Currumbin Community Special School.”
The Post School Services program helps young people transition from a special school or similar facility into adult life. The program supports the young people to develop skills that will enable them to take on adult roles within their families, and to participate in the life of their local community.
“Leaving school is always a milestone in the life of a young person, and of course in the lives of their parents and families. However, the transition from school to adult life can be very daunting for all concerned,” Mr Pitt said.
“The forum was an important step in our on-going discussions about ways to improve the options available to students, and to ensure that the options better meet their individual needs.
“It’s all about working together to develop innovative solutions that are both practical and responsive to local needs.
“I have great confidence that by putting our heads, hearts and experiences together, that we will develop effective solutions that will make a real difference in the quality of these young people’s adult lives,” he said.
