The Honourable Kerry Shine
$2M for new prisoner transfer facility at Maryborough Courthouse
The Queensland Government has approved $2 million for the design and construction of a secure holding cell and prisoner transfer facility at the Maryborough Courthouse.
Attorney-General and Justice Minister Kerry Shine said the project would improve public safety and conditions for prisoners, while preserving the heritage value and charm of the Wharf Street courthouse built in 1878.
“At the moment, prisoners being taken to court have to be detained in police vehicles and then escorted through public areas before being secured in the dock,” Mr Shine said.
“This project will put an end to all that and the department has already held detailed talks with court staff and police, supported by expert advice from a heritage consultant.”
Mr Shine said the new building would include a secure, screened parking area for police vehicles delivering prisoners to the courthouse, holding cells and an interview room for prisoners and their legal counsel.
“The two-storey cell block will be built at the back of the precinct with a secure flyover bridge to the second floor of the courthouse,” he said.
“The project will also involve works within the courthouse itself, including a screened enclosure around the jury waiting area on the northern veranda and improved security on the ground floor.”
Mr Shine said the new facility would be built behind the courthouse, between the existing archive vault and WWII concrete bunker, which were also heritage-listed.
“The bunker is now used by the Model Engineers and Live Steamers Association (MELSA) to garage the old steam trains they operate through Queens Park on weekends,” he said.
“MELSA makes a significant contribution to Maryborough’s historical appeal, so it’s great that we can continue to provide this accommodation, as well as build the new cell block.”
Mr Shine said today’s funding approval delivered on last year’s election promise and meant detailed design work could now proceed quickly, with tenders expected to be called in July.
“This should ensure construction can begin well before Christmas,” Mr Shine said.
