Two new, solid concrete bridges have opened to traffic on the Dawson Highway, Minister for Transport and Main Roads, Paul Lucas, has announced.

“The bridges across Zamia Creek and Clovernook Creek, east of Rolleston, replace old timber bridges, to improve safety and slash maintenance costs.

"Wider than their predecessors, these pre-stressed concrete bridges are the first in a $64million program to consign to history seven timber crossings along the Dawson Highway between Gladstone and Biloela," Mr Lucas said.

"Construction crews have now moved east of Biloela to replace remaining five old timber bridges at Double Creek, Deep Creek, Branch Creek, Doughboy Creek and Duckholes Creek."

Mr Lucas said the bridges demonstrate Main Roads’ Accelerated Road Rehabilitation Program in action, which is fast-tracking the upgrade of roads and replacement of old bridges in Central and Southern Queensland.

"On the Dawson Highway, we’ve wrapped seven bridges into a single project to deliver results quicker by buying materials in bulk and the reducing delays which can occur with multiple tender contracts.

"The Zamia and Clovernoook bridges are a fine example, they’re finished ahead of schedule by using pre-cast concrete piles and deck units manufactured in Rockhampton," he said.
