Premier and Minister for Trade
The Honourable Peter Beattie

NOMINATE NOW FOR BUSINESS RECONCILIATION AWARDS: PREMIER

Premier Peter Beattie is urging Queenslanders across the State to nominate for the 2007 Reconciliation Awards for Business.

Mr Beattie said the Awards, now in their fifth year, were of extra significance this year.

“2007 marks the 40th anniversary of the Referendum that saw more than 90 percent of Australians vote to acknowledge Indigenous Australians as citizens,” Mr Beattie said.

“The anniversary of this significant milestone is an opportunity for reflection on how far we have travelled as a nation towards reconciliation, and also a timely reminder that reinforces the need for us to continue working towards this goal.

“I established the awards in 2003 as a way of recognising and encouraging Aboriginal, Torres Strait Islander and non-Indigenous individuals, employers and organisations that actively promote cross-cultural awareness, and advance reconciliation in Queensland.

“Last year, the Reconciliation Awards for Business recognised a variety of businesses and community organisations.

“From an earthmoving company in Weipa, to a Sunshine Coast TAFE offering training and education opportunities to Indigenous youth - all of the groups recognised by the awards had an important thing in common – a commitment to reconciliation in Queensland,” he said.

Mr Beattie said businesses could nominate in any of the five categories:
? Emerging Business;
? Established Business;
? Employment and Training;
? Community Organisation; and
? Partnership.

Nominations close on Friday, 30 March 2007.
